On
October 16th, I reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak
in Africa at 19,341ft (5,895m). It was by far the hardest and greatest
accomplishment I've ever achieved, and none of it would have been
possible without my dad, John Connell, the best hiking partner I could
ever ask for and an inspiration to everyone he meets.
Another huge thank you to Climb Kili for terrific and experienced
guides, porters, and organizers. You made this an unforgettable
adventure for us.
Lastly, my heart goes out to the families
of the fallen hikers who will not return home from Nepal. They will not
be forgotten.
“You cannot stay on the summit forever; you
have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this:
What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what
is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but
one has seen.
There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions
by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see,
one can at least still know” - Rene Daumal (quote credit Harry)
