80 PERCENT OF TANZANIA HOUSEHOLDS HAVE NO ACCESS TO PUBLIC ELECTRICITY

The solar energy market offers great potential because more than 80 percent of the Tanzanian households don’t have access to public electricity, SIMBAYABLOG can reveal.

Speaking yesterday during an exclusive interview Tanzania Grassroots Oriented Development (TAGRODE) Coordinator, Dickson Mwalubandu said that his organization coordinated the event of connecting youth and renewable energy companies through renewable energy exhibition day held at Chamndindi Village in Iringa District Council.

Mwalubandu said, there is need to ensure that the general public is taught on the use of solar power as an option and an environmental friendly source of energy.

He said that the main theme of the event of the exhibition was to bring together solar companies, youth and community.

Adding that the companies of renewable energy (RE) which participated on that event include Solar Grid Company and Watu na Nuru from Anglican Church in Tanzania, and each company had different types of solar materials to display to local community.

He said that during the gathering the participants were in a position of understanding and knowing different solar materials, prices, uses and their capacity.

However, the Solar Grid Company was able to loan their products under the sponsorship of the village government such as the village chairman and village executive officer (WEO).

Solar Grid Tanzania Limited is a company which was founded in 2014 that sells high quality solar home systems in Tanzania, which was started by young Germany entrepreneurs.

Chamndindi villagers said the exhibition helped them to be familiar with different type of solar products and loaning system, which was helpful for them because they were able t0 pay a small amount of money on monthly basis.

World Wide Fund for Nature Tanzania (WWF-TCO) through its Energy program under the Renewable Energy (RE) project is implementing a Renewable Energy Project at Chamndindi Village in Iringa District of Iringa Region in joint venture with TAGRODE a non-governmental organization based in Iringa.

According to the TAGRODE Executive Director, Zubery Mwachulla, the aim of project was to conserve and protect the environment through related techniques and activities which consequently improve the living standards of the rural communities.

Mwachulla said in order to ensure sustainable access to modern energy services for the poor and marginalized communities they have conducted a baseline study to assess the existing Renewable Energy Technologies in Chamndindi Village.

He said due to environmental destruction and an overuse of firewood and kerosene at Chamndini Village and Iringa District it forced them to create awareness on the need of clean energies.

He also explained that the project’s focuses mainly on improving energy access, increasing the household income, boosting the availability of biomass energy, clean-safe water and gain environmental knowledge at large.
