Government Involves The Community In The Ecological Restoration Of The GRRC



The government has decided to involve the community in the ecological restoration of the Great Ruaha River Catchment (GRRC) to continue to benefit people and livestock.

The statement was made by a member of the task force of restoration ecology in the catchment of the Great Ruaha river, Abbas Kandoro as he was explaining the purpose of the task force set up by Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan to members of the community and water users association Lyandembela small river valley in the small town of Ifunda in Iringa district, Iringa Region yesterday.

Kandoro said the government has seen to engage citizens in the restoration of ecology in the great Ruaha river valley. 

“This participation aims to get your opinion to determine measures to restore the situation in the Ruaha river to the benefit of all those who benefit from this river, adding that the location of a small river valley of Lyandembela has a significant contribution to the availability of water flowing into the river Ruaha,” He said.

"Here we have the Lyandembela River at Ifunda that its water is getting scarcer, thus greatly reducing the water flowing into the river Ruaha. You will agree with me that things are contributing to the destruction of water sources especially deforestation, he pointed out ". 

He said another reason is cultivating in the wetlands and water pump use for irrigation in areas that are not permitted by the law.

Speaking on strategies the village that will use to deal with environmental damage, the secretary of water users association (WUA) in the small valley of the river Lyandembela (Jubodomlya), Elikus Ngweta, he will ensures everyone who cultivate within 60 meters to leave to make way for sustainable conservation of the basin. 

He stated the other measures they will educate the community on recognizing damage caused by the destruction of water sources and deploy education in primary schools. He talks about also planting water friendly trees in water catchment areas and the around water sources to assist pull rain.

Another strategy is to administer the law because the community is registered in accordance with the law. "We stand after the adoption of bylaws and legal forums and some people have tried. Let us remember that the community has 24 villages so far "added Ngweta. 

He added that due to these strategies, the four sources have dried up the water have now started pouring water again something which would refer to a state of good hope.

Meanwhile, the chairman of Ifunda village, Kayosi Kihwele said that 11 water sources have been preserved and preserving strategies being implemented. 

"In the preservation of water sources, some of the citizens who resist mainly cultivated within 60 meters from the riverbanks. Legal procedure has been taken against them. In addition, the village has become a friend of the water and trees with the aim of making the sustainability of existing streams "said Kihwele.

On her part, Chairperson of the Task Force number three, who is also Iringa Regional Administration Secretary, Wamoja Ayubu Some also commended the efforts made by environmental conservation at Ifunda ward. 

In addition, she urged the administration Ifunda Ward to ensure every village must form an environment committee. 


"Every village must have an environmental committee and the committees be developed to respond to the law. Among the responsibilities of these committees are looking to manage water resources in the areas concerned.
