National police commissioner Rhia Phiyega held a media briefing in Johannesburg today where she explained the circumstances behind Meyiwa's death.
According to Phiyega, Meyiwa was moving towards the door when he was
shot by burglars. Phiyega said Meyiwa was not necessarily trying to
protect anyone but was shot in a scuffle which saw him take a bullet to
the back. The bullet exited through his chest and he was declared dead
on arrival at Botshelong Hospital.
Meyiwa was at singer Kelly
Khumalo's Vooslorus home when the fatal incident happened. Phiyega told
the media gathering that there would be no preferential treatment
regarding Meyiwa's case after concern arose at the R250 000 reward that
was offered for information on Meyiwa's death.
Phiyega referred to
other high profile cases such as the Diepkloof murders which took place
earlier this year - she said a ransom was offered in that case as well.
Top detectives are due to work on Meyiwa's case.
"A
multi-disciplinary task team has been established to investigate the
crime... led by Gauteng's head of detectives," she told reporters in
Johannesburg. We are appealing sincerely to the public to assist with
the case. We believe someone, somewhere, somehow knows something about
this crime.
"This type of loss is undesirable for our country and doesn't bode well for our image," said Phiyega. (CHANZO: TIMES LIVE)
