Na Godfrey Mushi,
Iringa.

A TOTAL of 44,693 pupils including 23,438 girls and 21,255 boys, are expected to sit for standard seven national examinations in Iringa Region tomorrow (6th -7th September, 2010), it was discovered on Friday.
Speaking during an interview, Iringa Region Education Officer (REO)Salum Maduhu said number of primary school pupils who are going to do the national examination in the has dropped to 6,740 pupils compare to last year.
REO noted that last year candidates who sat for same examinations were 51,433 of which 26,879 were girls and boys were only 21255.
He pointed out the shortfall was a result of net enrolment whereby only children between six (6) and seven (7) year to start standard one unlike the previous year where children enrolled even with 11 years (primary school attendance of compulsory enrolment) which raised increased the enrolment rate.
However, it seen that there are more girls than boys doing examinations in that last year they were 26,879 girls and boys were 24,534, and this year 23,438 girls and boys 21,255 respectively, it has been observed.

Furthermore, REO said it is better that girls start school as ealier as possible because they mature faster that boys hence minimize teenage pregnancies in school.

On that note, the national electoral commission (NEC) has suspended the political rallies for two days (6th -7th) to allow pupils to sit for standard seven national examinations.

According to the director of elections Rajabu Kiravu, the decision reached after discussions between NEC and political parties to let pupils conduct their exams in calm environment.

He said that NEC took the precautious measures, taking in account that most of the campaigns are conducted nearby schools.
