It was on June 13, 2013 that the UN adopted its first resolution on albinism. The UN resolution instating International Albinism Awareness Day, came 17 months later, recognizing the need to increase awareness and understanding of albinism in order to fight against global discrimination and stigma against persons with albinism.
Awareness raising activities are taking place all over the world including a UTSS commemoration ceremony and program at the Sengerema Monument in Mwanza, Tanzania. Click here to learn more: www.albinismday.com
Leading up to this special occasion, UTSS launched the Hat Giving Challenge on June 1st, because simple items like HATS AND SUNSCREEN CAN HELP PREVENT the deadly skin cancer that claims the lives of most people with albinism in Tanzania before their 40th birthday. WE THANK THE MANY OF YOU WHO HAVE ALREADY PARTICIPATED! To date we've raised enough to buy 124 hats and 198 sunscreens, and the word about this preventable issue is spreading.
